The Unique World of NFTs
The world of NFTs is continually growing as the space progresses and experiments with new forms of art and animation. There are plenty of places to share your NFT art but SuperRare is one of the most established platforms in the space currently. There are many interesting features of SuperRare and the community surrounding that platform. Let’s take a look at how it all began, how to join the community, and where SuperRare is headed in the future.
SuperRare was established in 2017 by John Crain, Charles Crain, and Johnathan Perkins. They set out to create a platform where you can post your own art or you can collect artwork from other artists. SuperRare offers the opportunity to connect with other artists, monitor your art sales, and see the current trending artists. Essentially, it’s a social networking platform for artists to connect and feel plugged-in to the community. This site allows you to see the pricing for art pieces and the history of each artist on the platform. Another cool thing that SuperRare offers is the ability to collect resale fees. These fees operate like royalties by which the artist collects a fee for the resale of the original art. All of this is run by smart contracts. As noted by decrypt.co, “For the first sale of a new art piece, the original creator receives 85% of the commission while the gallery receives 15%. For any sales after that, creators receive 3% commission.”
SuperRare is known for specific use cases, namely, CryptoKitties and Gods Unchained. CryptoKitties is a dapp that allows users to buy, sell, or breed digital “kitties'' with one another. These collectible cats have been on the market since the beginning of SuperRare. Cryptokitties have their own website, which you can visit here. Along with CryptoKitties, SuperRare is known for Gods Unchained. Gods Unchained is a digital card game. These cards are collectables like CrpytoKitties, so all cards are unique NFTs but they can be earned in the gaming experience. The game’s premise is to pit gods against gods- are your gods more powerful? Play this game and find out. You can access the game’s website here.
So, as a new artist, how do you get involved with this platform? The process is actually fairly simple!
The first step is to download MetaMask here. This is a browser extension that allows you to interact with dapps and also serves as a wallet where you can store your ETH or ERC-20 tokens. After installation, you’ll go through the process of setting your MetaMask up. The extension will take you step by step through this process.
After you complete the MetaMask setup, you’ll set up a SuperRare account!! You can use this link for that process: https://superrare.co/sign-in.
Fund your account using ETH. There are plenty of ways to purchase ETH, I personally use Coinbase to do this. You’ll need to send that ETH to your SuperRare account. You’re going to encounter something called “gas fees.” These fees are just a set amount of Ethereum that is needed to process an art piece. Please note that gas fees are currently high so if you run into this problem, you can always come back and try again when gas fees are lower.
The last step is to upload your art! This step has some requirements related to the work you’ll be posting.
Make sure the piece is 50MB or less and you’ll want the format to be JPEG, PNG, GIF or MP4.
